While we are blessed with the advancement of technology, it most often used to de-humanize and de-Christianize rather than for the glory of God. Catholics, however, should rejoice over the fact that the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement have transferred hundreds of Ave Maria Catholic radio episodes onto digital media now made available free of charge. This is a huge opportunity for families to get together and learn the faith!
I have listened to probably close to a hundred of these episodes over the past couple of years and they are wonderful. These dramatized radio episodes beginning in 1935 offer the stories of many lives of the Saints as well as stories on how to live the Catholic faith. What is also refreshing is that many of the Saints portrayed in these episodes are not well known by Catholics today such as St. Julia of Corsica, St. Conrad of Piacenza, St. Paola Elisabetta and many others.
You can hear in many of these episodes the importance of evangelization, conversion and the glory of martyrdom for the faith, all seldom taught in our age. Each dramatized episode has several actors and accompanying sound effects that bring the stories to life and make it an enjoyable listening experience. I love putting them on before I go to sleep. After listening to a few episodes it was clear how far we have strayed from emphasizing the importance of our Catholic faith today. These podcasts are a good way to get the family together for 30 minutes and learn about the Catholic faith just like it was done before television, and radio was king!
